Plastic Pultrusion
Production Materials Applications

Pultrusion - Fiberglass Pultrusion

You may be asking yourself, what is plastic Pultrusion? And what benefits does plastic Pultrusion offer? First of all, Pultrusion is a manufacturing process, which uses fiberglass mats and rovings along with a liquid styrene resin to produce products, which have exceptional strength to weight properties. We manufacture products for markets including the window and door industry, tool handles, automotive, broom handles, lawn and garden equipment, building products and much more.

Secondly, there are many benefits to using pultruded fiberglass products. The Top 10 reasons or benefits of pultruded products over metal and wood include:

1. Exceptional strength to weight properties
2. Chemical and corrosion resistant
3. Excellent structural properties and dimensional stability
4. Independent of temperature extremes and humidity
5. Water and weather resistant
6. UV and fire retardancy
7. Low electrical and thermal conductivity
8. Very low coefficient of expansion
9. Consistent color throughout the part
10. Easily cut, chamfered and drilled

What is Pultrusion?

Pultrusion is a manufacturing process that produces reinforced plastic shapes with constant cross sections.

We also have expert engineering knowledge that we use to produce the complex profiles and resin systems that are necessary to solve our customer's problems. Teel's plastic Pultrusion also provide custom finishing operations including drilling, sanding, slotting, assembly and other machining operations. We have our own in-house machine design engineers who can build the equipment needed to reduce product costs and allow our customers products to get to market faster.

In summary, our Pultrusion Division has the engineering knowledge and manufacturing expertise in fiberglass products to achieve both low cost production and very high quality. For more information please contact, Pete Johnson at 608-355-4629 or pjohnson@teel.com.

Plastic Pultrusion Cross Sections

The glass reinforcements come in continuous rolls and are precisely positioned to feed into the resin bath and forming system. The resin bath saturates the reinforcements, which exit the bath into the formers. The forming system squeezes out excess resin while gradually bending the materials into the final shape. The shaped materials enter the heated die.   The thermosetting action is heat activated inside the die, the part is cured, and the hardened part exits the other end.

The puller system pulls the hardened part at a continuous speed, and a cut off saw cuts the finished parts to the desired length.

Plastic Pultrusion Custom Application

Interested in pultrusion for your application?
Accurate and complete information is necessary for us to design and quote a custom part. Here is a list of information we will ask:

1. Explain how your part is used.

• What is its function?
• Is it used indoors or outdoors?
• What chemicals will it be exposed to?
• Temperature range – heat or
cold extremes?
• Special properties needed

2. Attach a print or drawing of the cross section.
• What are the critical dimensions
or functions?
• List the length(s) needed.
• Are there special needs, such as a
UV inhibitor or fire retardency?
• What tolerances do you require?
• What is the color? Does it need to
be an exact color match?

3. Secondary Operations
• What fabrication or assembly is
required? Attach a print, if possible.
• Are there components that need to
be fitted to this part?
• Does part need painting or other
surface finishing?
• What are the packaging and labeling
requirements?

4. Quoting and Ordering Information

• Expected footage on initial order
• Timing and delivery of initial order
• Expected annual volume
• Timing and quantity of regular releases
• Who are the contact people for
purchasing and technical information?

Plastic Pultrusion Product Information

General Production and Tooling Information
Pultruded profiles can be run with a single stream or multiple streams. A customer’s annual volume and delivery requirements influence this decision, as does profile type. Complex and large profiles are likely to run on a single stream, while tubes and simple shapes may run on multiple streams. Tooling costs also vary with complexity and number of streams. The customer generally owns tooling for custom profiles. For unique profiles, there may be an additional investment to develop the process and build a unique guiding system. If volume can support multiple stream production, there is an economic trade off to consider when determining number of streams. The initial tooling cost is higher with multiple streams, but part price will be lower. Our engineers and customer support staff will assist you in determining how to best meet your needs.

What makes a profile pultrusion-friendly?
1. A wall thickness that is constant or varies within the profile by no more than 2.5:1. Wall thickness is determined by the requirements of the application. Minimum wall thickness for a pultruded profile is .070”, while the maximum wall can be .250" or more, if needed.

  2. All radii should be at least .031”.

3. Hollow shapes can be made, although profiles with multiple hollow sections should not have common walls. Tooling costs for hollow profiles tend to be higher and this may also be true of part price, depending on the complexity of the design.

4. There are several possibilities for attachment of corners and components. Screw bosses can be designed right into the part, or an end key can be inserted and permanently attached. Adhesives, screws, and staples can be used to attach plugs, caps, tips, weather strips, and a variety of other components, as well.

Finishing and Fabrication
Teel provides custom finishing operations on pultruded parts. We do component assembly, packaging, and product labeling in addition to secondary machining such as drilling, routing, sanding, slotting, and other functions.
